KDP Select or Wide? Three Authors Run the Numbers
KDP Select trades every other ebook store for Kindle Unlimited page reads. Three made-up authors with very different books show when that trade pays and when it doesn't.
Published October 17, 2026. Figures are calculated from KDP's published rates when the page is built.
The question comes down to one comparison. Your Amazon sales happen either way, so the choice is between what Kindle Unlimited readers pay you in page reads and what you would sell on every other ebook store combined. The authors below are hypothetical, and so are their sales. Every royalty is calculated with KDP's current Amazon.com rates, and every case assumes a KENP rate of $0.0045 a page. KDP sets the real rate from the KDP Select Global Fund it announces each month, so replace it with the figure in your own reports.
Each case also assumes a net amount per other-store sale, the kind of figure an author would take from their own sales reports. Those amounts are part of the example, not any store's rate.
Dana: a five-book romance series
Dana writes a small-town romance series, five books at $3.99 each, earning $2.63 per Amazon.com sale on the 70% option. Across the series, in a month she sells 400 copies on Amazon. In KDP Select her books are borrowed 1,300 times, each about 320 KENP long, and borrowers read 75% on average. Those borrows add up to 312,000 pages, or $1,404.00 a month.
When she was wide, the other stores together sold about 125 copies a month at $2.40 each to her, $300.00.
| Dana, per month | KDP Select | Wide |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon sales | $1,052.00 | $1,052.00 |
| Kindle Unlimited pages | $1,404.00 | none |
| Other stores | none | $300.00 |
| Total | $2,456.00 | $1,352.00 |
Select is ahead by $1,104.00 a month, $3,312.00 over a 90-day term. To match her page-read income, the other stores would have to sell 585 copies a month, 4.7 times what they did.
There is a second reason Select suits a series that sells abroad. In Brazil, Japan, Mexico and India, KDP pays 70% only to books enrolled in KDP Select. One of Dana's books at ¥500 on Amazon.co.jp earns ¥175 per sale outside Select and ¥349 inside it, before tax.
Marcus: a standalone thriller
Marcus has one thriller at $5.99, $4.00 per Amazon.com sale, selling 120 copies a month there. It is long, 410 KENP, and borrowers read 65% of it on average. With 90 borrows a month, Kindle Unlimited pays $107.93. Wide, he would expect about 30 sales a month elsewhere at $3.40 each, $102.00.
The margin is thin: Select ahead by $5.93 a month. With numbers this close, the right question isn't which total is higher but which assumption is shakiest. This grid moves the two guesses Marcus is least sure of, borrows and other-store sales:
| KU borrows a month | 15 wide sales | 30 wide sales | 45 wide sales |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | Select +$8.96 | Wide +$42.04 | Wide +$93.04 |
| 90 | Select +$56.93 | Select +$5.93 | Wide +$45.07 |
| 130 | Select +$104.90 | Select +$53.90 | Select +$2.90 |
Each cell is the monthly difference between the two choices. The answer flips on numbers Marcus doesn't know yet, so he shouldn't guess them: enroll for one 90-day term, read the actual pages from the KDP reports, and compare them with the wide sales he recorded before. Because enrollment renews automatically, he should note the term's end date and decide before it renews.
Priya: a how-to guide
Priya's guide to bookkeeping for freelancers sells at $7.99 with a 4 MB file of tables and screenshots, so delivery takes more of each sale: she earns $5.17 per Amazon.com copy. It is 240 KENP, and her readers jump to the chapter they need: 35 borrows a month at 30% read is 2,520 pages, just $11.34.
Wide, she sells 40 copies a month on other stores at $5.20 each, $208.00. Wide is ahead by $196.66 a month, $589.98 a term. Kindle Unlimited pays for pages read, and a reference book that is used rather than read cover to cover earns little per borrow. Just 3 other-store sales a month replace all of her page reads.
Her paperback is not part of this choice either way. KDP Select covers the Kindle ebook only.
What actually decides it
Side by side, the three cases turn on a handful of numbers, and only one of them is about royalty rates.
- Pages read per borrow. KENP length times share read. Dana's borrow is worth 240 pages, Priya's 72. Same rate, very different pay.
- What you already sell elsewhere. A wide audience you have built is income you give up for every term in Select. If you have never been wide, you're comparing real page reads with a guess.
- Sales in Brazil, Japan, Mexico and India, where 70% needs Select.
- The cap only matters for very long books. KDP pays for at most 3,000 KENP per title per customer, so it only touches titles longer than that, such as a multi-book omnibus.
Run your own figures through the KDP Select vs wide calculator, and use the KENP calculator to turn a month of page reads into money at your actual rate. For a series that also has a box set, the guide to box set pricing covers how the page cap hits omnibus editions.
The KDP Select rules to know before you enroll
These come from KDP's How to enroll in KDP Select, KDP Select and Digital Book Pricing pages.
- Terms last 90 days and renew automatically unless you untick auto-renew. Unticking doesn't end the current term. KDP's page says you can cancel within three days of a term starting; after that you contact KDP.
- The ebook must be exclusive. During the term the Kindle ebook can be distributed only through KDP and public libraries. You must hold exclusive rights to the main content, and public domain content isn't eligible.
- A 10% sample is allowed. You can make up to 10% of the book available on other sites as a sample, which KDP says is roughly the length of the Kindle free sample.
- Print and audio are unaffected. You can keep distributing print, audio, video or any format other than a digital ebook elsewhere.
- One promotion type per term: either a Kindle Countdown Deal or a Free Book Promotion. Unused days don't roll over. Countdown Deals run only on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.
- 70% in Brazil, Japan, Mexico and India requires Select, and the price in those stores must still meet their 70% list price requirements.
- Unpublishing pauses the term. If you unpublish an enrolled book, its term pauses and resumes when you republish, and the book must stay exclusive for the rest of it.
- KU pays for first reads only. A reader can reread a borrowed book, but KDP pays only for pages read the first time.
