Planner and Journal Page Count Calculator
Plan the interior of a planner, journal or logbook: count pages per day, week and month, round to KDP's even page count, and see the spine width and printing cost before you design a single page.
How the page count is worked out
pages = days × pages per day + weeks × pages per week + months × pages per month + extra pagesThe total is rounded up to the next even number, because KDP prints on both sides of each sheet. The calculator then checks the count against KDP's limits for your ink and paper, and uses the same tables as the spine width and printing cost calculators. The minimum list price is the lowest price at which KDP pays you anything.
Worked example: a dated daily planner
One page per day for a year, a two-page monthly spread before each month and 6 extra pages (title, year at a glance, notes) comes to 395 pages, which KDP prints as 396 pages. As a 6" x 9" black-ink book on white paper that is a 0.892" spine, $5.75 to print on Amazon.com, and a minimum list price of $9.99.
Worked example: an undated weekly planner
Two pages per week for 52 weeks, a two-page spread for each of 12 months and 8 extra pages is 136 pages. On 8.5" x 11", a large trim, it costs $3.31 to print. At $9.99 it earns $2.68 per copy at the 60% rate.
Planning a low-content book that sells
Decide the price first, then fit the page count to it. Low-content buyers compare on price and page count, and printing cost rises with every page above 110 on black ink. A 120-page lined journal and a 200-page one look similar in a search result but differ by about a dollar in printing cost on Amazon.com.
Undated planners sell all year, while dated ones only sell well in the months before the year they cover and need a new edition each year. If you publish dated planners, start uploading in late summer. Daily planners with one page per day run to about 400 pages; at that size, cream paper adds spine width and makes the book heavier, so white paper is the usual choice.
Large trims such as 8.5" x 11" cost more per page than 6" x 9", but they suit workbooks and planners where buyers want room to write. Check the cover size calculator for the full wrap dimensions once you have the final page count.
Frequently asked questions
Why must the page count be even?
Every sheet of paper has two sides, so KDP counts both. A 395-page interior needs one more page to make 396. Plan for that last page, for example as a notes page, rather than leaving the count odd.
How many pages can a KDP paperback have?
With black ink on white paper, 24 to 828 pages for most trim sizes. Cream paper allows up to 776, standard color 72 to 600. A full-year planner with two pages per day goes over most of these limits, so split it into two six-month volumes.
Does a blank or lined page cost less to print?
No. KDP charges per page whatever is printed on it, so a lined page costs the same as a page full of text. Cutting pages you don't need is the only way to lower printing cost, and under 110 pages black-ink books pay a flat fee, so pages up to that point add nothing to the cost.
Will KDP reject a low-content book with repeated pages?
Low-content books such as journals, planners and logbooks are allowed, and they can be published without an ISBN. KDP does reject books it sees as duplicating existing content or giving a poor customer experience, so make the pages useful and the description accurate about what is inside.
