How each store's royalty is worked out

70% royalty = 0.70 × (list price − VAT − delivery cost)
35% royalty = 0.35 × (list price − VAT)

A sale earns 70% only when three things are true: the list price is inside that store's 70% band, the sale is in one of KDP's 70% territories, and, for Brazil, Japan, Mexico and India, the book is in KDP Select. Otherwise the same sale pays 35%. Delivery cost is the file size in megabytes times the store's rate (for example $0.15/MB on Amazon.com, ₹7/MB on Amazon.in and ¥1/MB on Amazon.co.jp, where files of 10 MB or more pay nothing). KDP rounds to two decimals, or to whole yen in Japan.

Worked example: the Australian price trap

You set $4.99 on Amazon.com and let KDP convert it. Suppose the Australian store ends up at A$3.49. That is under Australia's 70% floor of A$3.99, so each sale there pays 35%: 0.35 × A$3.49 = A$1.22. Raise it to A$3.99 and the same 1.2 MB book earns 0.70 × (A$3.99 − A$0.18) = A$2.67 per sale. Fifty cents on the price more than doubles the royalty. (Enter your buyer's GST rate to see the after-tax figure.)

Worked example: Japan and Brazil with and without KDP Select

At ¥500, a 1.2 MB ebook that is not in KDP Select earns 35% in Japan: ¥175 per sale before consumption tax. Enrolled in KDP Select, the same sale pays 0.70 × (¥500 − ¥1) = ¥349. In Brazil, R$14.99 inside KDP Select pays R$10.24 before tax, against R$5.25 outside it. If a meaningful share of your sales come from these four stores, that is part of the KDP Select decision; the KDP Select vs wide calculator weighs the rest.

Setting prices store by store

Readers in each store see a price in their own currency, and Japanese prices are whole yen with no decimals. Start from the price you want in your main store, then check each other store against its band in the table above rather than trusting the conversion. The two prices that most often break are Australia (the band starts at A$3.99, higher than an exact conversion of $2.99) and the euro stores, where the price you type includes VAT and a converted price can slip under €2.69.

Two other rules can override your list price. KDP requires a 70% ebook to be priced at least 20% below the Amazon list price of any physical edition, and if Amazon price-matches another store below the 70% minimum, that sale pays 35%. Large files cost more on the 70% option; the delivery cost calculator shows when it stops paying.

Frequently asked questions

Does KDP convert my US price automatically?

Yes, if you let it. When you set a price on Amazon.com, KDP can fill the other marketplaces from it using its own exchange rates. Those converted prices often land on odd numbers and can fall outside a store's 70% band, especially in Australia, where the 70% minimum is A$3.99. Check each one here and set it by hand where needed.

Why do Brazil, Japan, Mexico and India pay only 35%?

KDP's Digital Book Pricing page says sales to customers in those four countries earn 70% only when the book is enrolled in KDP Select and the price is inside that store's 70% band. Without KDP Select, every sale there pays 35%, whatever the price.

Which VAT or GST rate should I enter?

The rate your buyer pays, because Kindle list prices include it outside the US and KDP pays royalty on the price without it. KDP's own examples use 7% for Germany and say UK ebook VAT has been 0% since May 2020. Rates elsewhere change, so check your country's current rate for ebooks.

Is the 70% band the same in every store now?

Not quite. Since July 7, 2026, the 70% maximum is 12.99 in US dollars, Canadian dollars, pounds and euros, A$15.99 in Australia, R$31.99 in Brazil, ¥1,650 in Japan, MX$199.99 in Mexico and ₹599 in India. The minimums differ more: A$3.99 in Australia but £1.77 in the UK.
