KDP Hardcover vs Paperback: Is the Hardcover Worth Adding?

A KDP hardcover costs more to print than the paperback, comes in five sizes and has no Expanded Distribution. The two editions compared line by line and in dollars, and the kinds of book where the extra edition earns its place.

Published October 17, 2026. Figures are calculated from KDP's published rates when the page is built.

A hardcover is a second print edition of the same text, so the comparison comes down to two things: what the hardcover can't do, and what each copy costs. Royalty rules are not among the differences. KDP's Hardcover Royalty page uses the same 50% and 60% rates and the same $9.99, €9.99 and £7.99 lines as paperbacks, so the $9.99 threshold matters just as much for a hardcover priced near it.

Sources: KDP's Print Options page for trims, page counts, inks and the case laminate binding; the Hardcover Printing Cost page for costs; the Hardcover Royalty page, which covers sales through Amazon only, for royalties. The paperback side of the comparison is laid out in full in the printing cost guide. Hardcover publishing isn't supported on kdp.amazon.co.jp, according to both hardcover pages.

The per-page rate for black ink is the same in both editions on Amazon.com. The whole difference in cost sits in the fixed part: the case adds the same amount to every hardcover, whether it has 120 pages or 500. Black-ink hardcovers also have a flat band, from 75 to 108 pages, at $6.80 for a regular trim; at 110 pages the per-page formula takes over and the cost is $6.97, up from $6.80 at 108.

Three books, both editions

Each book below is priced as a hypothetical example on Amazon.com. The last row of each block is the hardcover list price at which it would earn the same per copy as the paperback.

The poetry collection is on the flat band in both editions, so the gap is the difference between two flat fees: $4.50. At $19.99 the hardcover earns $5.19 against $3.69 for the paperback. Short books are where hardcovers look worst on cost, because the case's fixed price is large relative to a small paperback bill.

The historical novel pays $4.65 more to print in hardcover, which is exactly the difference in fixed cost. At 60%, the hardcover price has to be about $7.75 higher than the paperback just to stand still, so $25.74 matches the paperback's $5.23. At $27.99 it earns $6.58.

The picture book is a large trim in premium color. Premium color hardcovers have no flat band, so all 80 pages are charged from the first. The hardcover costs $12.05 against $7.40 for the paperback, and needs to sell at $22.74 to earn the paperback's $1.59.

The same novel outside the US

The gap between the editions is a different size in each marketplace, because each has its own fixed costs. Here is the 380-page novel on cream paper again, with the extra printing cost of the hardcover and how much higher its price must be, at 60%, to earn the same as the paperback.

MarketplacePaperbackHardcoverExtra per copyPrice rise to match
Amazon.com$5.56$10.21$4.65$7.75
Amazon.co.uk£4.65£7.95£3.30£5.50
Euro stores€5.31€9.21€3.90€6.50

The lowest hardcover price KDP would accept for this book is $17.02 on Amazon.com, £13.25 on Amazon.co.uk and €15.36 on the euro stores. Prices converted from a single US price won't necessarily keep the margin over the paperback that you planned in dollars, so check the hardcover in each marketplace.

For your own book, the hardcover royalty calculator gives the hardcover's cost, royalty and minimum price, and the format comparison calculator puts paperback, hardcover and ebook side by side from one set of inputs.

Which books suit which edition

The matrix below works from the rules and costs above, not from sales data. Whether readers in your category buy hardcovers is something only your own market research and sales can tell you.

Your bookRecommendationWhy
Under 75 pagesPaperback onlyKDP hardcovers start at 75 pages. Adding pages just to qualify changes the book for the reader.
Over 550 pagesPaperback only, or split the bookHardcovers stop at 550. A 550-page cream hardcover already costs $12.25 against $7.60 in paperback.
Needs standard color or groundwood paperPaperback onlyNeither is offered for hardcovers. The hardcover would have to move to premium color or cream/white paper, at a higher cost.
Custom or unusual trim sizePaperback, or redesign for a hardcover trimHardcovers come in five fixed trims. A different trim means a reformatted interior.
Relies on bookstores and libraries via Expanded DistributionPaperback for that channelExpanded Distribution isn't available for KDP hardcovers.
Black ink, 110-550 pages, standard trimHardcover is a low-risk add-onThe extra cost is a fixed $4.65 a copy on Amazon.com; a price $7.75 above the paperback covers it.
Black ink, 75-108 pagesHardcover only at a clearly higher priceThe flat fee ($6.80) is 3.0 times the paperback's ($2.30); the hardcover needs a much higher price to earn the same.
Premium colorPrice the hardcover from its costNo flat band and a higher fixed cost; work out the matching price before choosing one.

The paperback stays the base edition

On the numbers, a hardcover is never a substitute for the paperback: it can do less (fewer trims, a narrower page range, no standard color or groundwood, no Expanded Distribution) and costs more for every book. It makes sense as an addition when the extra fixed cost is a small part of a price readers will pay, which is the long black-ink book on a standard trim.

Budget for a second cover file, too. KDP's Hardcover Print Elements page explains that the printed cover is wrapped around two-millimetre case board, with a wrap section that folds over and is glued to the inside of the case, and the spine is flat. None of that exists on a paperback, which is why KDP's cover calculator treats hardcover as a separate binding type with its own dimensions and template. A paperback wrap resized by eye will not fit it.
